Tight Socks May Leave Permanent Scars on Tiny Tots

by Joan Trombetti, Writer | September 25, 2007
Parents need to
guard against their
kids wearing
overly tight socks.
According to a team of researchers from Washington University, some socks made for tiny tots may have elastic that is too tight, causing marks that could lead to permanent scars.

The researchers were able to distinguish sock-line bands from other infant leg markings which can be associated with more serious conditions like limb defect. Dr. Colin Holden, president of the British Association of Dermatologists said that the research was a good example of how researchers are discovering new patterns of symptoms all of the time, and that "sock scars often indicate inflammation in the subcutaneous fat or dermis. The research is published in the British Journal of Dermatology.

The team warns that parents should closely examine the socks they buy for their babies to prevent this sort of damage to a child's legs.
