Geisinger has completed a systemwide deployment of 3D mammography, making the advanced imaging technology available at all of its hospitals and outpatient centers throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania.
The rollout includes 14 locations, including Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Geisinger Lewistown Hospital, and Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre. Patients can now schedule appointments for 3D mammograms without needing to travel outside the network for access to this diagnostic tool.
“Having 3D mammography across the system allows us to increase patient access and improve patient outcomes,” said Dr. Timothy Murphy, director of women’s imaging at Geisinger. “Our patients will no longer need to travel outside of the Geisinger service area to receive state-of-the-art breast imaging.”

Also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, 3D mammography captures multiple images of the breast from different angles, offering improved visibility of dense tissue compared to traditional 2D mammograms. The technology is designed to enhance detection of small tumors and reduce the number of unnecessary follow-up scans triggered by false positives.
The expansion supports Geisinger’s ongoing investment in imaging infrastructure and follows broader industry trends toward adopting 3D mammography as a standard of care for routine breast cancer screening.
