Olympus Corp. has introduced its first AI-driven surgical planning tool through a partnership with Ziosoft, a medical imaging software company. The technology uses AI to convert CT and MR scans into real-time 3D models, aiming to enhance surgical precision for liver, lung, and kidney procedures.
The application is designed to improve visualization and planning for specific surgical specialties:
Thoracic surgery: Creates 3D lung models to aid in cancer treatment planning.

Liver surgery: Helps surgeons assess anatomy, visualize blood vessels and tumors, and plan liver-sparing procedures.
Urologic surgery: Supports minimally invasive nephrectomies by mapping tumor size and location.
"Physicians traditionally utilized flat, 2D images to plan procedures. This new application uses imaging such as CT and MR scans to translate static images into dynamic 3D modeling in real time utilizing AI and thousands of radiologic images," Olympus stated in its announcement.

"We are excited to partner with Ziosoft, which has its own long history of developing AI software to help physicians make more accurate diagnostic and treatment decisions during procedures,"
Beyond preoperative planning, the 3D modeling technology could support surgical education by helping fellows and newer surgeons navigate complex procedures.
"With the rise of lung cancer screening, more patients are undergoing complex segmentectomies, which Ziosoft’s REVORAS platform can support by enabling rapid pre-operative planning, allowing thoracic surgeons to make critical surgical decisions in minutes," said Rajeev Taitriya, vice president of business development and marketing at Ziosoft.
Olympus will highlight the platform during the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) annual meeting, held March 12-15 in Long Beach, California.
The launch aligns with Olympus’ broader strategy to integrate AI into surgical workflows, complementing its Intelligent Endoscopy Ecosystem. At SAGES, the company will also showcase its EVIS X1 Endoscopy System and CADDIE AI System, designed to assist in colorectal polyp detection and surgical navigation.
