Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has received a historic $125 million donation from Aileen and Brian Roberts and their family, marking the largest single gift in the institution’s 170-year history.

The funding will support the creation of Roberts Children’s Health, a new inpatient tower and hospital expansion set to open in 2028.

The planned facility, located on CHOP’s main campus on Civic Center Boulevard, will exceed 20 stories and significantly expand the hospital’s capacity. The project also includes modernization efforts for CHOP’s existing infrastructure.

“Roberts Children’s Health will greatly enhance the hospital experience for our patients and their families, equip our staff with the latest innovations, and revolutionize how we provide care,” said Madeline Bell, CHOP’s president and CEO.

The new inpatient tower will house over 700 private patient rooms and more than 30 imaging and procedure rooms, covering specialties such as cardiology and neurology. CHOP also plans to integrate automated medication delivery and other streamlined systems to optimize care.

In addition to clinical enhancements, the facility will include family-centered spaces such as lounges, pantries, quiet workrooms, and a family amenities suite with fitness, meditation, and entertainment areas. Mental health support services will also be expanded.

The Roberts family has been a long-time supporter of CHOP, previously contributing to the development of the Roberts Center for Pediatric Research and the Roberts Collaborative for Genetics and Individualized Medicine. Their philanthropic efforts extend to multiple sectors in Philadelphia, including education, healthcare, and the arts.

“With this gift, we hope to deliver on Madeline’s vision for the future of pediatrics and inspire others to support this life-changing work happening right here in our backyard,” said Aileen and Brian Roberts.

Founded in 1855, CHOP is the nation’s first pediatric hospital and operates one of the largest pediatric research programs in the country. It serves patients from across the U.S. and more than 65 countries through its CHOP Care Network, which includes over 50 primary and specialty care locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
