Mission Cancer + Blood to join University of Iowa Health Care for $280 million

by Gus Iversen, Editor in Chief | October 10, 2024
University of Iowa Health Care (UI Health Care) and Mission Cancer + Blood have announced plans to form a statewide cancer care network, pending approval from the Iowa Board of Regents.

The $280 million agreement aims to address the state's high cancer rates by bringing advanced oncology services to patients, particularly in rural areas.

Mission Cancer + Blood, which has provided cancer care at over 20 locations in Iowa for more than 40 years, will integrate with UI Health Care in the coming months. This will allow Mission's patients to benefit from UI Health Care's enhanced resources, including access to its National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center.

“Mission and UI Health Care have strong, long-standing, and trusted partnerships with health systems across the state and critical access hospitals in central Iowa,” said Phil Stover, CEO of Mission. "By joining forces with UI Health Care, we can provide more patients with access to comprehensive services, shortened time between diagnosis and treatment for rare and difficult cancers, and expanded options for the latest therapies offered as part of clinical trials."

Dr. Denise Jamieson, UI vice president for medical affairs, highlighted that the collaboration would foster new levels of cancer care, research, and education across Iowa. "Working together, we have an opportunity to reduce the pain and suffering caused by cancer for many Iowans," she added.

As part of the integration, UI Health Care has committed to maintaining long-term employment for Mission staff, ensuring continuity of care and service.
