Geisinger Medical Center has unveiled plans for a $880 million expansion aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in central Pennsylvania. The expansion will feature an 11-story tower at the hospital's front, augmenting the main entrance and transforming the campus with state-of-the-art facilities to meet current and future healthcare needs.

The new tower will include a larger emergency room, doubling the current space and increasing bed capacity from 45 to 60. It will also feature updated intensive care units and operating suites, designed for improved collaboration among medical teams handling critical patients. The hospital will transition to a 100% private-room facility, enhancing patient comfort and privacy, and providing more space for collaborative care.

The expansion also includes a multilevel parking garage connected to the hospital via an enclosed sky bridge, improving accessibility for patients and visitors. This garage will facilitate better connections between the hospital and the Pine Barn Inn.

“This project will completely reimagine the Geisinger Medical Center campus to strengthen collaboration among our staff and units for better patient care,” said Megan Brosious, chief administrative officer for Geisinger’s central region.

Geisinger serves 1.2 million people across Pennsylvania, operating 126 care sites, including 10 hospital campuses. The nonprofit system generates $10 billion in annual revenue.

The investment addresses the growing demand for healthcare services, especially among the aging population in central Pennsylvania. The expansion follows the construction of the Geisinger Behavioral Health Center Danville, a 96-bed inpatient facility set to open in 2025.

Geisinger Medical Center offers specialized treatments, including Level I trauma care, transplant surgery, advanced cancer care, and pediatric care through the Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. It is a Magnet hospital and a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and it was the first in the nation to receive a Comprehensive Heart Attack Center designation in 2022.

Work on the Danville campus has already begun with a roadway project to improve traffic flow. The main expansion is set to begin in 2025, starting with the demolition of the Dickey Clinic. The new tower is expected to open in phases, with completion targeted for 2028.
