McLeod Health is constructing a new $56 million hospital at its Carolina Forest campus, designed to address the healthcare needs of the rapidly expanding population of Horry County, South Carolina.

The project will introduce a four-story, 48-bed facility aimed at enhancing access to medical services in the region. Scheduled to open in 2026, this will be the first hospital built in Horry County since 2011.

The new hospital seeks to alleviate the strain on local healthcare facilities which have seen a significant uptick in usage, with over 110,000 patient visits to McLeod's Carolina Forest campus in the past year alone. The growing demand correlates with population projections estimating that Horry County will host 584,500 residents by 2040.

The facility will include advanced operating suites, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory services, consolidating comprehensive care under one roof.

“This is a visionary project that will transform healthcare in Horry County,” said Scott Montgomery, CEO of McLeod Health Carolina Forest, in a statement. “These beds represent more than just numbers; they symbolize hope, compassion, and healing. Whether it’s a teen being treated for a sports injury or a senior citizen seeking comfort, each bed will be a sanctuary for recovery.”

The expansion is part of McLeod Health’s strategic initiative to create a continuum of care across its facilities, including McLeod Seacoast, McLeod Loris, and the Carolina Forest campuses, ensuring high-quality care across the county.
