Siemens Healthineers has selected SAS’ Internet of Things (IoT) analytic solutions to manage data generated by its global install base of MR, CT and other systems.
“A driving force behind the transformation [to value-based, patient-centered care] is the IoT connectivity between people, machines and environments,” Jason Mann, vice president of IoT at SAS, told HCB News. “IoT connectivity will drive an unprecedented increase in the amount of data available, and advanced data management is critical for better operational and clinical decision-making.”
SAS will help Siemens predict system problems and potential downtime several days before a failure occurs. The company’s goal is to optimize its service processes, save spare parts and reduce troubleshooting time.

Dr. Mirko Appel, head of analytical services in the customer services organization at Siemens, reported that Siemens’ analytical system receives hundreds of thousands of lines of sensor data each day, and a large amount of it is only semi-structured. He believes that automated and scalable analytics are crucial to help them offer good decision support to their service-delivery organization.
Mann explained that SAS is unique from other IoT analytic solutions on the market because it offers the only integrated "edge-to-enterprise" IoT analytics platform. It provides differentiated capabilities for managing data so it’s analytically ready and available to integrate with other data sources.
“We help our customers visualize and model their data using a variety of approaches from basic statistics to artificial intelligence,” said Mann. “In addition, we help deploy insights wherever they can extract value, whether that's in the data center, the cloud, or at the edge.”
