DOTmed: Tell us about this purchase.

The machine –- a TrueBeam linear accelerator (known as a linac) made by Varian Medical Systems –- will be used to treat hundreds of cancer patients each year at North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton, London. It enables tumours resulting from conditions like prostate and lung cancer to be targeted with pinpoint accuracy by

The £2.85 million system includes x-ray and CT scan imaging techniques, known as image-guided radiotherapy, to identify and track the tumour before and during the treatment so that even with small movements such as breathing, the radiotherapy beams are guided to the precise spot.

DOTmed: Any final thoughts?
NMUH’s linac radiotherapy system is only the second of its kind in a London NHS hospital. It will take about five months to install and complete testing before it’s ready to use on the first patients in November. Patients will come from Enfield, Haringey, Barnet and further afield.

DOTmed: Why was the company and/or product best for your needs?
It will help deliver high quality cancer treatment to our patients and is an important step in modernizing the hospital.
