General Electric Co. said Monday it's relocating the headquarters of GE Healthcare's X-ray unit from Waukesha, Wisconsin to Beijing, China.
The medical imaging giant also said it will be relocating its X-ray leadership team to the new base. The new location will enable the managers to better understand the needs of "high growth markets" in China and nearby India and Southeast Asia, the company said in a statement.
Among the executives making the move are the chief financial officer, the chief marketing officer and Anne LeGrand, the company's vice president and general manager of X-ray, LeGrand said during a briefing in Beijing.
The news of the relocation comes on the heels of GE Healthcare's recent launch of "Spring Wild," a three-year initiative that focuses on the development and distribution of medical products across China.
In late 2010, GE also announced an investment of $2 billion into China, including the creation of six Customer Innovation Centers(CIC). For the new CIC facility in Chengdu, the company is hiring more than 65 engineers and other staff.
The company plans to develop at least 20 new products for the Chinese health market, as well as other emerging markets in the near future, LeGrand said at the briefing.
GE's X-ray unit is solidifying its presence in China during the country's transition from analog to digital imaging technology. The company anticipates seeing double-digit growth in this sector, Bloomberg reports.
The relocation of its X-ray headquarters, along with GE's broad range of investments in the China health care market, will double the number of the company's research and development staff across the country within the next two years, GE said.
On Friday, GE reported that its health care unit's second-quarter profit grew by 8 percent to $711 million, up from $661 million last year.
