Interview with RSNA president Dr. Hricak

by Sean Ruck, Contributing Editor | November 18, 2010
DOTmed Business News contacted Dr. Hedvig Hricak, current RSNA president, to get an idea of what attendees should know about this year’s show. Hricak also shared her personal opinion about her role as president of the RSNA.

DMBN: The theme for this year is personalized medicine. What role will the radiology sector play?

Dr. Hricak: The role of biomedical imaging in delivering personalized medicine will be monumental. Modalities such as ultrasound, CT, MRI and PET/CT are already enabling earlier disease detection and more precise diagnosis, treatment selection, treatment planning and guidance, and treatment follow-up. As molecular imaging – particularly with PET/CT and MRI/PT— advances, it will allow all of these aspects of patient care to be personalized to an ever-greater degree. In addition, greater use of theranostic agents that allow simultaneous diagnosis and treatment with real-time treatment monitoring will further expand the role of imaging specialists in the delivery of personalized care.

DMBN: China is featured in a special presentation this year for the first time. What is the purpose of this presentation and why is it important to radiologists in the upcoming year?

Dr. Hricak: China has made tremendous advances in radiology, investing in education, research and modern equipment. These advances have already resulted in many presentations at the annual RSNA meetings and published articles. The presentation will give attendees a glimpse of some of the most exciting research coming out of China, including research that combines modern medicine with traditional Chinese medicine. Our hope is that China Presents– as well as Latin America Presents - will stimulate international communication and collaboration.

DMBN: Are there any programs, booths or lectures that you recommend RSNA attendees not miss?

Dr. Hricak: The wonderful problem in answering your question is that everything in the program is enticing. I can only suggest that attendees let themselves be guided by their individual tastes.

DMBN: What has been your most memorable moment as 2010 president of the RSNA?

Dr. Hricak: Witnessing the enthusiasm of invited speakers who have, without exception, been happy to contribute to the annual meeting’s program.

DMBN: What future role do you intend to play in the society?

Dr. Hricak: I am looking forward to working on the Board of the RSNA Research and Education Foundation, which is uniquely positioned to encourage and help develop future leaders of radiology. Advances in research and education are essential for the future of our specialty.

DMBN: What advice would you offer for individuals looking to pursue a leadership role for the RSNA?

Dr. Hricak: Volunteer your time and effort. It is a noble cause.
