“Showtime” for digital health innovations for the future at MEDICA 2023

A hundred start-ups and more than 120 high-caliber professional speakers will participate in this year’s MEDICA CONNECTED HEALTHCARE FORUM which is an established part of the program at MEDICA 2023, the world’s leading medical trade fair to be held in Düsseldorf from November 13 – 16. More than 5,200 exhibitors will showcase their technologies at the trade fair. The agenda at the Forum (in Hall 12) will also offer content highlights such as the finals of two start-up competitions: At the 12th MEDICA Start-up COMPETITION (November 14 at 3:00 pm) the focus will be on the entire spectrum of innovations for the healthcare sector - from artificial intelligence (AI) to health apps, solutions for laboratory diagnostics and medical robotics. For the first time this year, “Sustainability” will be a new category. The 15th “Healthcare Innovation Worldcup” (November 13 at 1:00 pm) will focus on intelligent “Internet of Medical Things” (IoMT) solutions such as digital biomarkers, smart bandages and network-connectible wearables.

The broad spectrum of new technologies can open up interesting options for medical care at home. This also supports the goals of the German Federal Government. In their coalition agreement, the ruling parties even explicitly pledged to increase the scope of outpatient medical care. What can modern medical technology do in this setting? “Alternative care delivery models – Balancing at-home technology, outpatient and clinical healthcare” is the title of a Forum session on November 13 at 1:00 pm. Prof. Martin Holderried, Managing Director and Chief Medical Information Officer of the central unit at the Tübingen university hospital, will share his ideas regarding patient-centered, quality-focused, digital and sustainable medicine. For him, digitalization within hospitals is above all a developmental process of organization across all professional categories and levels of hierarchy. According to Prof. Holderried, digitalization affects far more than just IT. While Dr Roland Strasheim, Marienhaus MVZ GmbH, will explain what could be improved in medical care models, Dr Helmut Hildebrandt will present the concept of “micro hospitals”. Aside from his work as Chairman of the Board of OptiMedis AG, he is especially interested in the conceptualization and development of regional health care systems and their implementation in German as well as European regions. He is a leading voice in discussions concerning Managed Care programs. “Decentralized wound care” will be a more specialized topic, presented in the lecture by Dr Sebastian Kersting from the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology. Afterwards, start-ups and scale-ups like ‘Skylabs’ and ‘Garmin’ will present their solutions, for example in the field of 24-hour blood pressure monitoring and remote monitoring of patients.
