Provider Spotlight - Behind the scenes at Unity Health Care

by Gus Iversen, Editor in Chief | April 15, 2022
From the April 2022 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine

HCB News: Are there any special projects or initiatives you're undertaking or planning to undertake?
JHB: When I think of what success looks like, I’m focused on health equity and improving the outcomes of our patients. We will be spending time this year strengthening our care model to ensure we are providing patient-centered care that is top quality. We are also going to be really focusing on optimal health and wellness in our communities — particularly in our communities of color — and have some projects in progress to address the care needs of older adults and leveraging technology in ways that can advance care without widening the digital divide.

HCB News: I understand Unity was founded originally to serve homeless individuals and families. How have your demographics and patient populations changed over time?

JHB: At Unity, we serve nearly 100,000 patients annually- that means 1 in 7 DC residents is a patient of Unity Health Care. We still do unbelievable work for the unhoused but we are really focused on providing comprehensive, culturally congruent care to all of our patients, regardless of their housing status. We care for patients at all stages of their lives and often in whatever circumstances they may be facing.
We have also expanded our locations to wards across the city, in order for our patients to reach us as easily as possible. We have nine stand-alone community health centers located in 6 of the District wards, twelve health care sites at homeless shelters located in 7 wards across the District, two school-based health centers at Cardozo and H.D. Woodson High School, and provide medical services at the D.C. Correctional Facilities.

HCB News: Does Unity have partnerships with hospitals in the region?
JHB: We have partnered with several hospitals in the region on key initiatives. I’ve recently joined the advisory council for the new hospital on the St. Elizabeth’s campus and I am looking forward to additional collaborations around medical education. We have been collaborating with Howard University Hospital on maternal and child health to provide greater access to pregnant women in the City. Our team partnered with Sibley Memorial Hospital to bring cancer care and cancer navigation to our patients in our health centers to improve access. We also have educational partnerships with several hospitals, where we provide opportunities for their learners and they provide opportunities for our Family Medicine and Nurse practitioner residents.
