From the August 2018 issue of HealthCare Business News magazine
Medical technology has reached the point that there are fewer stand-alone devices in the hospital. In today’s environment, advanced systems are all connected to the hospital’s network, blurring the dividing line between IT and HTM, especially when there is a problem. The AAMI conference offered multiple sessions on cybersecurity and the need for biomedical departments to work within the IT environment. The consensus was that a good portion of a BioMed department’s responsibilities bleed over to IT, and vice versa. At the very least, IT and HTM must communicate daily to ensure a safe environment.
It’s very exciting to see how AAMI and its participants have evolved – from the early 70s, when Ralph Nader first discussed the problem of electrical safety in hospitals, to the “business plan” of managing technology. The overall takeaway from this year’s AAMI conference: there is much more to the profession than the repair of technology.
