Reducing CT dose rates is of
particular concern for
pediatric patients.
The CT system is the primary device that determines patient dose rates. The tube is a peripheral device. It only reacts the way HV adjustments and software algorithms tell it to. System parameters that affect the patient dose include:
• Exposure parameters (kV, mA, time)
• Source-to-image distance (SID)
• Source-to-patient distance
• Collimation/filtration
There is only one parameter related to the tube that affects dose rates---beam hardness. During tube installations, it is imperative to follow OEM specifications for beam calibration. This will ensure that output falls safely within the specified range.
