RSNA Video Profile: Shina Systems

At RSNA 2009, DOTmed News met up with Shina Systems to take a look at the Caesarea, Israel-based company's latest offering: 3D-i.

The software, which provides advanced visualization for medical imaging, stores most data remotely, in a platform known as "cloud computing," one of the biggest IT trends at this year's show.

"Cloud computing today allows us to provide 3D-i without having to put together our own data centers," Jacob Margolin, who manages U.S. operations for the 15-year-old software business, tells DOTmed News in the video.

That is, the software can be accessed by any internet-ready PC, and requires almost no "footprint" or dedicated workstation. This slashes the up-front costs of installing the software to virtually zero (not including user fees), as no new hardware need be bought; and it makes it easier to share information with users at multiple locations.

And oddly enough, all the data are safely hosted by the same company you buy your books from.

"We actually use today the cloud architecture or infrastructure from Amazon, and we potentially could use any cloud provider," Margolin says.
