Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley has launched a $100 million pediatric facility in Edinburg, Texas. The eight-story hospital will offer comprehensive acute care around the clock, marking it as the first designated free-standing children’s hospital in the region.

The facility houses 119 pediatric beds and employs over 700 staff members. It includes a Level III Pediatric Trauma Center and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, ensuring broad spectrum care ranging from emergency services to specialized surgeries with pediatric anesthesiologists.

President Matt Wolthoff emphasized the hospital’s commitment to serving the community's needs, particularly for those with complex medical conditions, by providing care "regardless of their ability to pay." This sentiment was echoed by Driscoll’s president and CEO Eric Hamon, who highlighted the necessity of proximity and accessibility to healthcare which spurred the development of the hospital.

Located at 2820 West Michaelangelo Drive, the hospital's strategic placement aims to address the healthcare shortage in a region home to over half a million children. Many families previously traveled to Driscoll's Corpus Christi location for care, a journey that will no longer be necessary.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley is also expected to generate substantial economic impact, with an estimated $124.7 million in annual economic growth to Texas, according to a study by the Perryman Group. The new hospital began operations by transferring inpatients from DHR Health and conducting scheduled surgeries.
