Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, has partnered with BaraSeen Medical Company to launch the Halcyon oncology system at BaraSeen's Batik-X radiation therapy center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

An image-guided volumetric intensity modulated radiotherapy system, the Halcyon platform was cleared by the FDA in June 2017 and modulates the radiation beam when targeting tumors. It features integrated imaging, rapid treatment times, and user-friendly operations, aimed at increasing precision and minimizing exposure to healthy tissues. With a reduced physical footprint, the system also cuts down on power consumption and construction needs.

Dr. Hossam Alassaf, CEO at BaraSeen, highlighted the advantages of the Halcyon system, noting its efficiency and the comfortable treatment environment it creates. "The system's versatility accommodates diverse patient needs, which we believe will greatly enhance our capabilities and patient care," said Dr. Alassaf.

Laurent Amiel, president of Radiation Oncology Solutions for Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Varian, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. "This collaboration represents a significant step forward in our mission to expand global access to high-quality care sustainably," Amiel stated. He stressed the importance of this initiative in improving cancer treatment and patient experiences in Saudi Arabia.

Facing growing demands for its Varian radiotherapy systems, Siemens Healthineers invested over $26 million last year into a second manufacturing plant at its site in Rudolstadt, Germany that will be used to manufacture electron accelerators for radiotherapy systems.
