UCSF Health commenced construction of the Helen Diller Hospital, a $4.3 billion facility, on April 27 at its Parnassus Heights campus in San Francisco.

Named after philanthropist Helen Diller, the 15-story hospital is slated to open in 2030 and is designed to be a state-of-the-art center for complex care.

The new facility will boast 682 beds, a 37% increase over current capacity, and will include 22 additional operating rooms, bringing the total to 40. It will also expand emergency care capacity by 71% to accommodate 70 beds. The hospital's design incorporates natural elements into its architecture to foster a healing environment. Features include innovative operating suites integrated with advanced imaging technologies, such as MR scanners, aimed at facilitating precise and personalized medical procedures.

Architects Herzog & de Meuron, along with HDR, have designed the hospital to merge cutting-edge medical technology with a calming, nature-infused environment. UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood highlighted the hospital's potential impact on healthcare delivery, education, and biomedical research, noting that "this development will place UCSF at the forefront of healthcare innovation."

The project is part of a broader 30-year plan to transform the Parnassus campus and includes significant investments in community infrastructure, such as a $20 million contribution to enhance local public transit and a commitment to a 30% local hiring rate for construction.
